JEDDAH: Three Saudis and a Yemeni accused of running three bogus Haj companies
have been arrested in Jeddah.
The concerned authorities have started a probe into their fraudulent practices
following complaints filed by
aspiring domestic Haj pilgrims.
The arrested people were accused
of cheating several citizens of huge amounts of money with a promise to
facilitate performing Haj.
First Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, spokesman of
Jeddah police, said that the concerned officials from the Ministry of
Haj and Jeddah police arrested the operators of the bogus company after
receiving a tip-off.
“Procedures are under way to return the money to the victims. Stringent
punitive measures will be taken against those involved in running fraudulent
Haj firms,” Al-Eqtisadiah business daily reported quoting Al-Bouq.
Meanwhile, Saad Al-Quraishi, chairman
of the National Committee for Haj and Umrah at the Council of Saudi
Chambers, said that secret squads from the monitoring committee are
tracking down fraudulent Haj tour operators and taking penal action
against violators.
The committee is also facilitating victims of
such bogus companies to perform Haj after registering them afresh with
licensed companies. “The mission of the committee, comprised of
representatives of the ministries of interior, Haj, and commerce and
industry, as well as other concerned agencies, includes investigation
into complaints received from domestic pilgrims with regard to various
violations of the ministry’s regulations and fraudulent means adopted by these
firms to cheat and swindle aspiring pilgrims," said Al-Quraishi.
“Each violator would be slapped with fines of up to SR100,000. In case of
repeat violation, the fine would be doubled to SR200,000. The case of
the violator, accused of swindling money from intending pilgrims without giving
them service, would be referred to the Shariah court for further penal action,”
Al-Quraishi said.
He added that the committee would also take steps to return the money to the
victims.
“Foreigners involved in running fake companies will be deported after serving
their punishment,” he said.
Operating fraudulent Haj firm is considered a crime that comes under the
category of crimes of cheating and swindling. It adds to the problems of the
authorities because victims of such firms, after incurring losses worth
millions of riyals, sneak into the holy sites and sleep in open areas
without any tents or other facilities.
Minister of Haj Fouad
Al-Farsy recently repeated his warning against bogus companies. Al-Farsy said
his ministry has provided the governorates and municipalities with the names
and numbers of establishments licensed for this year’s Haj.
The ministry has also set up the toll-free number, 8002444480, to receive
complaints from citizens and expatriates against fake firms. So far, the
ministry has received 3,700 complaints about bogus Haj companies on
this number.
