To effectively print to a .pdf file, you might create a postscript printer
driver that prints to a file and then use ghostscript to convert it to .pdf.
If that is what you have in mind, use the printer driver wizard and select
the output port as "file" and then pick one of the HP printers that use
postscript (PS).  Use that driver for your postscript file output and it
will ask for a file name when printing.

I use this frequently because the postscript files can be manipulated rather
elegantly, if you know the postscript programming language, to create
negative images or mirror and step and repeat parts of PCB's.  Perl is a
good manipulation language to use for this.  Many good Postscript and Perl
books can be found at Barnes and Nobles, for example.
