Cam,
        haven't seen or experienced your problem because I have not tired to
do what you are trying to do. But here is my stab at it. I believe that you
would have to eliminate the plane layer or at least the plane layer netname.
Then the updates should stop occuring. Try option 1 first.
So:
1) eliminate the net assigned to the plane.
OR
2a) eliminate all primitives (incl.text) from the plane layer.
 b) eliminate the netname assigned to the plane layer.
 c) remove the plane layer form the setup using the layer manager.
