I missed this on first reading.  This is not actually the case.  For 
synchronising, the hidden handles are persistent.  It is during 
Export-To-Spread and any subsequent Import-From-Spread that the handles are 
valid only for a session, and hence the session must be kept active.  This 
is not the case for the synchronizer.
