When you do a global change in SCH you need to do two things:

1. Choose the "Attribute To Match By"
2. Edit the "Copy Attributes" field you want to change.

For example: Change all resistor footprints FROM 1206 TO 0805

(don't add the quotations marks in the following text)

Put "1206" in the Attribute To Match By-Footprint field.
(This will select everything with 1206 currently in the footprint.)

Then you would add "{1206=0805}" to the Copy Attributes field right next to
the footprint field.
(This tells protel to replace anything in this field that had 1206 with
0805.
