.c The Associated Press BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - A group representing people beaten by miners during riots in Romania's capital in the early 1990s called Friday for the dismissal of the new transport minister, alleging he supported the deadly clashes. Victor Ene, who heads the Association of Miners' Riots Victims, said Transport Minister Gheorghe Dobre helped organize the miners' transport by rail to Bucharest in 1990. Dobre was working for the national railway company at the time. Clashes erupted when miners beat up student demonstrators at anti- communist rallies that shut down parts of the capital. At least nine people were killed in the riots and hundreds were injured. The violence helped prompt thousands of Romanians to emigrate to the West. Ene told state news agency Rompres that Dobre had fired a railway engineer who tried to stop the trains carrying miners to Bucharest. Dobre has denied he was involved in transporting the miners. In a recent newspaper interview, Romania's newly-elected president, Traian Basescu, expressed support for Dobre, saying that the miners' trip to Bucharest was organized by a different department of the railway company than the one where Dobre worked. Basescu said the miners' transport to Bucharest by rail was ordered by the government. He said Dobre tried unsuccessfully to stop miners from returning to Bucharest a year later. The miners then highjacked the trains. In Bucharest, they clashed with police and entered parliament, forcing the government to resign. Last month, former President Ion Iliescu caused outrage in Romania when he attempted to pardon one of those who led the riots.
