I'm in the process of writing my math-work (grad. level), and would like to use

Well, as a newbie you you'll need a) the software, minimal an editor to
write and save your documents and a LaTeX-engine to "compile" them and
b) recommended some advice how to start.
For operating systems based on Windows (XP and 7) you might try the
ProTeXt-package for a). ProTeXt is also shipped with additional
documents which explain how to install the system and doing the first
steps in writing LaTeX-documents.
