I'm having the same problem on Ubuntu 12.10. It seems to me you are correct that gtest is at fault, but I'd agree with Walker that the problem appears to have been fixed in gtest 1.5.0, putting the ball back in your court, so to speak. The right thing to do here is to upgrade gtest to the version in which the bug has been fixed.
