I agree that an isEmpty() method might be more intuitive than
getSerializedSize() == 0, but we just don't change the core API easily
unless there is a significant benefit (which should be backed by real
data). The request for isEmpty() comes up occasionally not only in Java
but also in C++. However, it's never proved to be a significant performance
win so we decided to not add it in the core API.
As you have noticed, we added the parser API, but that's the result of
extensive benchmarking and testing in real production services. Things are
much different on the isEmpty() side and there is less hope for isDefault().
