keyCode is a native property in JavaScript of the Event object. You
might find this helpful:
http://github.com/blatyo/blacksmith/blob/master/src/blacksmith.js

It allows you to do things like:
$('search_field').hotkey('return', function(event){
  $('search_button').click();
});

$(document.body).hotkey('ctrl+shift+s', function(event){
  alert('you found the secret key combination');
});
