I tested and adapted (removed XHTML references, used paragraphs
instead of line breaks and inserted another div into the #closeme
element as suggested by the docs, see 
http://wiki.github.com/madrobby/scriptaculous/effect-slidedown)
your script and it really seems that scriptaculous does not behave as
expected.

Just for curiosity, I tried the slide effect in IE8 (quirks mode only)
and it works perfectly! o_0

Sorry, it's not a solution... but I'm still looking for.
