I tested and adapted (removed XHTML references, used paragraphs instead of line breaks and inserted another div into the #closeme element as suggested by the docs, see http://wiki.github.com/madrobby/scriptaculous/effect-slidedown) your script and it really seems that scriptaculous does not behave as expected.
