I think this may be essentially what we need to solve the
problem. It's on my list of things to do, but I don't know when

checked in.Sure thing. The casefile stuff is certainly something that I'd get advice on before hacking it, since I've not fully understood it. I assume that you'd not want to impose the penalty of an additional pointer on the ccase struct ? --- that would mean a lot of extra memory for very large casefiles, when it wouldn't in general be needed. My idea was a "derived class" of struct ccase, but I've not yet thought out the details carefully.
