Slackware distro, version 12. It installed kernel version 2.6.? and
gtk 1.2. I told it not to install KDE, which may account for the crusty
gui libs having to be upgraded.

Doh! I just ran it, and it works fine. I had thought it would run 
from the build directory. Oops.
