I checked in a fix for this problem. It's reminded me of just how ugly the examine code is. It really needs to be completely rewritten.
Jason, can you see how it goes on your solaris box? I can't actually
run "make check" on mine, because I don't have a native compiler.
The only two test failures now should be two which use $PPID which is
a bash thing and non-portable.

Sometimes, tests/command/examine.sh segfaults. This didn't happen
the first time I ran make check, but did on subsequent runs of make
check. (I didn't run make clean)
