I've pushed a change to master, which should allow non-ascii to be entered everywhere except variable names. Spss allows certain non-ascii characters in variable names, but there are a lot of changes which would need to be made to pspp before we can allow it.

I'm not sure whether you are saying that you can't create
variables with those characters in the names? Variable names in
PSPP are not allowed to contain any of those characters. (They
are allowed in most other places, such as variable labels.)
