The owner of the trademark wouldn't have any legal grounds to object, since we explicitly say that it's an *alternative to* SPSS. We're not claiming (or implying) that we *are* SPSS or that we have the endorsement of the trademark owner. But in fact, I agree with you. The "free alternative to SPSS" is appropriate for the web site, because it'll be found by search engines. But once somebody has installed it, presumably they know what it is - so we no longer have any justification to mention the non-free software.
