So you have :

COMPILE = $(CC) $(DEFS) $(DEFAULT_INCLUDES) $(INCLUDES) $(AM_CPPFLAGS) \
        $(CPPFLAGS) $(AM_CFLAGS) $(CFLAGS)
        
which suggest that this rogue string is coming from  one of the variables

$(AM_CPPFLAGS) (CPPFLAGS) $(AM_CFLAGS) $(CFLAGS)

Try printing the values of those and then work backwards to find out where
the bad one is getting set.
