Oh, yes.  As with older versions of SPSS, you must create
a variable before entering data.  This behaviour was altered last
week, so in newer versions this restriction will not apply.

(Personally I think the old behaviour was  good thing.  It encouraged
users to think about the format of their data before blindly typing in
numbers.)
