When you read from a *.csv file like below, you can specify the attributes.
Like this:

GET DATA
/TYPE=TXT
/FILE='input.csv'
/FIRSTCASE=2
/VARIABLES=
A F8
B F8
.

What did you specify as the type of the date column?
