I got the same problem on my SuSE.
The solution was a #define in config.h:
#define SHUTDOWN_WORKS_WITH_UNIX_SOCKETS 1
Try this out...

I didn't try the latest snapshot yet...
BTW I have two very similar SuSE Linux i386 box, but the configure recognize
SHUTDOWN_WORKS_WITH_UNIX_SOCKETS only on the machine, where the kernel is
2.1.130... The other with 2.0.35-SuSE is left without it. :(
