Tips on what not to forget:

    * Create the '/dev/pilot' device:
      serial: ln -s /dev/ttyS# /dev/pilot
      usb: ln -s /dev/usb/ttyUSB# /dev/pilot
    * Find your port by doing a HotSync and then checking 'dmesg' output.
    * As root, change the permissions on /dev/pilot device:
      chown 'user' /dev/pilot
      chgrp 'group' /dev/pilot
      chmod ug+rw /dev/pilot
* With 'pilot-xfer' and 'J-Pilot' start the HotSync from your PDA before
engaging the application's sync features. (/dev/pilot needs to be active).

Found it. It's on /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 according to dmesg.

But for some reason, it still will not connect. it just times out. Any ideas
what could be causing that?

hit sync and run dmesg from a terminal. this will tell you which USB port

OK - tried /dev/ttyUSB0 through 10 with no luck. Verified that it's
/dev/ttyUSB0, USB1, ... in the process. I specificed that it was a
Handspring USB connection and also tried standard serial. No joy...

Any way I can tell which USB port the mouse is on and work from there, since
the cradle is on the same controller? Could I be doing something else wrong?
