BadCRC errors are a cable issue. The drive sends its data and includes a
crc checksum; the controller receives the data and notices the data is
corrupted via the checksum.

Are you sure you have an 80 ribbon cable (as opposed to a 40 ribbon
one)? Is it one of those ultra-long cables?

40-wire cables work, they're just slower.

In _my_ experience, CRC errrors are dead drives.

If you can, swap the two maxtors around and see whether the problem goes with
the drive.

The drives are not dead. Both of them work fine under RH8.0 and Windoze 98. The DVD works fine as a CD-ROM under Linux and DVDs play fine under Windoze. (I haven't played a DVD under Linux yet, since sound does not work on this chipset either - see my previous bugzilla listing.)
