I have found that removing the power cord and battery are almost never
required. (even though it looks so)
Depending on the model you can do the following:
Hold the FN-key while using the power button. This does not work with
wake/sleep or whatever its called button. Also, some laptops will poweroff
if the power button is held for 4-5 seconds solid. (DESKTOPS TOO) I have
worked with hundreds of laptops and have only actually needed to pull
battery for 1. I offer this to everyone since pulling the power can be a
violent act for the laptop or desktop  resulting in further problems like
blasting the config or worse.
