I have always been a die hard compile from source person.  I don't 
quite understand how rpms work, no doubt i will soon enough tho;) 
(Sorry i come from a Slackware background).

Because rpms make life easier.  You can just use the freshrpms.net
rpms for Xine, and DVD's play just fine.  Same with mplayer rpms from
freshrpms.net.  If at all possible, you should stick to rpms on a rpm
based system.
