KDE Screensaver doesn't work

The screensaver under KDE and Psyche does not appear to work.

Regardless of what screen saver I choose, nothing ever shows up. Eventually, the monitor power saver kicks in and it goes blank, but there is never a screen saver on it.

This system worked fine under KDE/RH 7.3: it is a Hitachi 19" CM751 off a nVidia TNT card.

Any suggestions on how to get the screensaver to work as it should?
