IMO, the Bluecurve theme (be it under GNOME or KDE) looks very "professional".

Tobias, try Blackbox or one of its derivatives(fluxbox, hackedbox). IMO
its the best WM out there.  Another good one is PWM(smaller and faster
than even blackbox)

Try XFce, too. It's got all the capabilities of GNOME/KDE (actually it's got much more) yes is as small and fast as Blackbox or IceWM.
