Thanks for the reply, but I looked under Fonts and there is no option anywhere (at least I didn't see one) to enable sub-pixel rendering.
Under preferences:///, Font (or run gnome-font-properties)

the bottom half is for Font Rendering. Lower right is
"Subpixel smothing (LCDs)".
Click the "Details ..." button, and you get finer control.

The 4 choices on the main panel are default combinations
of the choices on the detail page.

NOTE: Subpixel rendering only works for LCDs, and it depends
on the order of the pixels on the screen. Try different
setting to get the one that looks best to you.
