Hi Dale,

Thanks for your advice. Maybe I have not explained clear in my previous email. What I expect to do are

1) Using the 'tar' command to backup the complete hard drive, partition by partition and save it on the slave drive (I have only 3 partitions in the hard drive created automatically at time of installation)
2) Reformat the hard drive including its re-partitioning. I am not going to make a fresh installation of RH8.0
3) Restore/untar the tarball back to its respective partition.

Is it necessary to format the slave drive first because it is in FAT32

Once you are done re-installing and have the slave drive connected
change over to it and at a prompt issue the following:

tar xvzf stephen.tar.gz

If issue the command on slave drive, will it find its way back to its own partition

This will untar the files to the slave drive and you can then copy them
to your main drive. Hope this helps...
