I forgot we were running a 2.4.20-2.25 kernel from rawhide. Switching back to 2.4.18-19.8.0 it all worked fine - no memory increase. 2.4.18-24.8 (?) also worked fine.
Must say that a list of 'changes' to the kernel by RH would be nice (there was a different thread about this but little seems to have appeared).
