I've found I really haven't had to change anything yet with the fast track.
Now, down the road once I get more proficient, I may kick myself for that,
but for now, I don't think I've even wanted to be tempted to open it, but
maybe once, and that was just to see what it would do, and is it accessible.

How is the tascam control pannel on the mac side? Is there much to it, or is
it pretty standard. With the Fast Track stuff, we deal with a completely
inaccessible control panel for changing direct monitoring and such.

My vote in this catogory is still the tascam US122 or US144, i believe
both are in the MKII iterations now. 2 mic inputs or line inputs, midi in
and out headphones jack only minor gripe is the speaker outs are on rca
jacks instead of balanced quarter inch or xlr jacks, but theres ways
around it and thats probably not a concern for someone starting out. For
around $100 the US122 can't be beat and for around $130 the US144 adds
digital in and outs over S/PDIF. I own the 144 so can answer specific
questions on that if you want. Also the tascams interface is bus powered
so no power suppply needed, and plenty of gain for dynamic mics on the
built in preamps.

Subject: portable interface recommendation
Hello all,
I am getting ready to purchase protools in the next day or so. I have
a macbook pro, and I am looking for a portable interface to do work
with. Basically I am looking for one where I can record midi and 1 or 2
mikes. Eventually, I want to upgrade my studio computer to an iMac, but
right now I want to just use my macbook pro to do my work on. I was
looking at the m-box family of interfaces but wanted to see what people
would recommend here. So basically I am looking for a portable
interface to do recording and something I can plug some speakers in for
mixing until I can upgrade my studio pc to an iMac. Thanks,
Brian=
