Not sure if its what you want, but, on my system at least, varifi also changes 
pitch, rather like a record slowing. 

I have read what you want wrong, but seems like you are mor after a gradual 
slow down, which you can write in as tempo information.

Sorry if I have this wrong, but I've not followed the rest of the thread.
