if you have an iMac the answer is simple. External. It is not worth the hassle 
to take an iMac apart I don't know if you have read about whats involved in 
actually takeing one aparto to install hardware other than the RAM which they 
make really easy. If you really want internal like speeds you got a tunderbolt 
on the 2011 iMac you probably wont be usinf for a  while get a thunderbolt 
drive. but honestly a 7200 RPM USB or Firewire drive is more than plenty 
sufficient.
