honestly in this case you should just select the area with noise and delete it. 
No need for automation here, you are just making things more complicated than 
it needs to be in that case. However to answer your question. select the part  
at the begins u want to mute. and enable mute. Then enable automation and set 
it to write  and play the selection in its entirety. Then move the cursor to 
where  the selection ended and unmute the track. then hit play  and let a 
little of it play. When you hit stop you can set automation  to read  and then 
go to beginning of the  project to check if it works as intended.
