That being said, Thunderbolt is supposed to give anything connected to  via 
that cable to your computer the same  speed as any piece of hardware connected 
internally.  So a hard drive connected via thunderbolt should be just  as fast 
as a harddrive installed internally. Also if you get a firewire audio 
interface, you will most likely need to get a firewire to thunderbolt cable as 
newer macs now  only have thunderbolt ports and no firewire ports anymore. I 
think the mac mini's are the only current production models that have firewire 
still.
