Hi John,

First, you'll have to make sure that the checkbox under the Operations tab of
Pro Tools preferences is set for insertion to follow scrub. Also, check the box
for audio during fast forward and rewind. Under the main menu bar, make sure to
check the option for linking track selection and edit selection.

Now, make sure you have a track selected. At least once from the time you open
the session, you'll need for there to be an insertion point or cursor created
within that track If you have a control surface with a scrub wheel, simply
engaging the scrub function will automatically create an insertion cursor. If
you're not using a surface, use shuttle mode or just fast forward for a moment.
All of these actions will create an insertion point within the track. Once
you've done that, you don't have to do it again.

There are so many ways to edit audio that it's difficult to encapsulate but,
for starters, you have 4 modes which are Shuffle, Slip, Spot and Grid. 99.9% of
the time you'll either use Shuffle or Slip. The names are somewhat vague.
Shuffle means if you cut or delete a region or clip, the audio that follows it
will move up by the amount you've cut or deleted. Slip mode means all of the
audio that follows what you've cut or deleted stays exactly where it originally
was.

There is, of course, the technique of using down and up arrows during playback
to select a range and then cut or delete. For this to work well, you have to
make sure the insertion is not following playback in the Pro Tools preferences.
Control-n toggles this setting.

Other than that,, Command-e splits regions. Tab and Option-Tab moves forward or
backward to the next region boundary. Using Shift along with the previous
shortcuts makes a selection.

Those are the most basic things to remember. It can get a whole lot more
complex but that should get you going.

Slau
