I just managed to get this done using an iPhone on iOS6. Couldn't get VoiceOver in Mavericks or NVDA to do much with that fancy schmancy calendar thingy they're using, but thought people might like to know it's doable with iOS. For what it's worth, I checked the format that was entered by clicking the calendar, which turned out to be YYYY-MM-DD, so 2014-01-17 would be 17th Jan this year. Whether you'd have any joy entering numbers in that format, I'm not sure, can't find a way to take another stab at that form.
