Actually, when you create a new track, it's automatically selected so, if you copy from an existing track, crate a new track and paste, the copied audio will appear in the newly created track. As usual, it's always recommended to make keep track and edit selections linked in the Options menu. This applies for only tracks that are shown. In other words, if tracks 2 through 4 are hidden, pressing Control-semicolon will move the insertion cursor from track 1 to track 5.
