I'm familiar with the VST implementation, but VTM (Virtual Tape
Machine) is now in AAX as a beta. Perhaps contact Slate Digital to
see if you can still get into the testing phase.
They recently greatly reduced the CPU hit of VTM by a lot, so you can
now stick it on every track and sub-group in a project if you want,
yes even the VST version.
If you're looking for an authentic emulation of tape, this is it!
It's not as immediately noticeable as emulations from Waves or UA,
but to me at least, it sounds a lot more like the real thing.
On Windows using Sonar, almost all parameters are accessible - input
and output levels, tape type, speed, bias, etc. What isn't accessible
is the tape hiss slider, which if you are used to super-quiet digital
material, you will want to turn down. People go on about the magic
of analog tape sound, but I think they forget that it gave us what,
13 bits or so of resolution above the noise floor? LOL
Anyway, unless the Mac version is more accessible using VoiceOver,
you will need someone to find that slider and drag it to minimum.
Then save immediately so you can recall that quieter instance for all
future projects.
