Hi:
the Roland capture x series interfaces are quite good. I have the capture x 2
which runs on 3 AA batteries or usb bus power. You are of course better off
with the batteries especially if you want to use condenser mics with phantom
power. the mic preamps are very adequate, and you can get the latency down to
96 samples if you have a powerful enough mac book and are not loading up a ton
of plugins. It also will work with the apple camera kit on an iPad, there is a
switch on the back to put it in to the appropriate mode. And it does go up to
96k sampling and is very sturdy and compact.
It is usb2, I know you wanted thunderbolt, but this is surprisingly good.
Firewire is on the way out as far as I can tell, though presonus still makes a
mobile line of interfaces.
