Hi, I thought on the apple.com site there is a page about how to use one
of these with no display it is like you connect an adapter to the
display portion so it thinks one is connected but no display is
connected to this adapter. I will post the link if I locate this page
again as not only blind people but servers and other types of systems
like backup only people want to do this as well. Could you not just
edit the startup scripts or go into terminal and unload or stop the
display service whatever it is called? This is how I turned off
spotlight completely and disabled swap space is using terminal and once
it is off it stays off until you turn it back on. Nick Gawronski

What're the biggest differences in the new mac mini from what I own?
I have the Mini late 2012 I5 2.5 GHZ, and have upgraded it to 8GB of
ram as aposed to the 4GB it normally came with. I also have the
default configuration of the 500GB internal hard disk, and currently
am running it on 10.9.5 Mavericks. I don't want to upgrade it to
Yosemite until the Safari Voiceover bugs are worked out, as well as
Avid officially approving ProTools with 10.0. I know it works now
whith some incredibly minor Voiceover issues, but I'd rather just hold
off until I get those issues resolved. Besides, I actually really
really like Mavericks anyway.

Subject: a word about the new Mac Mini
I don't know what people's experiences have been with Mac Minis in the
past. There have been many stories about whether a monitor was
necessary and I suppose it depended upon the model and interface among
other things. I simply wanted to share an observation about the new
Mac Mini regarding it's operation with and without a monitor.
In the case of using an HDMI cable, make sure your monitor display is
powered on and on the correct input source because VoiceOver will be
routed to the display by default. You can certainly change this but,
once you plug it in, even on the fly, the default sound output of the
computer will be the HDMI device.
Now, regarding "headless operation," the Mac Mini will function
without a display attached and voiceOver will work fine and all. I
found that voiceOver was noticeably sluggish. I thought at first that
this was just a new problem with Yosemite and was admittedly a bit
worried. I operated headless on the Mac Mini for a day or two while
making some adjustments to the OS before connecting the control room
monitor which shares an input source from another computer. As soon as
I connected the Mac Mini to the display, VoiceOver sort of rebooted
and I was prompted with the default "Getting Started" pre-recorded
tutorial. This was a bit unusual, I thought, but then VoiceOver began
behaving normally, not sluggish but quite fast.
Again, there have been various scenarios over the years and I haven't
heard anybody mention anything about the new Mac Minis and displays,
running headless, etc. Thought it might help someone.
