Nick, Make sure Timeline and Edit Selection are linked under the Options menu. Show only one track and make sure it's selected. Make sure you're in the edit window. Press Control-Up Arrow twice. This will ensure that your track view is not set to Mini or Small. Bring up the Item Chooser with Control-Option-i. Type m u t to bring up the mute button quickly. Press Return on that. The first item after the Mute button is the track display pop-up menu which should say "waveform." If it says anything else like "volume" or "pan," select "waveform" from the pop-up list. Without the waveform being displayed, no audio will be edited and only items like volume automation and other data will be edited while the underlying audio is unaffected.
