Make sure the mouse pointer is routed to the VoiceOver cursor and use a track pad or physical mouse for the double-click. I'm not sure if you'll have luck with keyboard commands alone for double-clicking. Try it and let us know if you're successful. I find much of the way folks learn is by experimenting for themselves. There's very little that can truly go wrong. Don't be afraid, just dive in :)
