Hi Brian, I wouldn't get too hung up on gain reduction meters unless you have a really good reason to want a very specific amount of gain reduction. First, go with what sounds good. Beyond that, I would keep it set to compression and not specifically summed but, again, if there's some reason you want to know exactly how much gain reduction you're incurring between input and output, by all means, go for the summed display, although you won't know how much of any given reduction is being caused by which plug-in.
The different meter types deal with visual scale and ballistics of the meters. It really doesn't have an effect on how VoiceOver perceives it because VoiceOver doesn't speak the result any differently, regardless of the visual display.
