Actually, one more thing I want to throw in regarding this. Slau, you said
a while back that you're absolutely in your words I vividly remember,
stupid, your's, not mine, to mix without a control surface. The truth is, I
know plenty on this list who don't have a surface who're mixing just fine.
I 100% agree that with a surface, you'll do things more accurately, most
likely, but that doesn't mean we're stupid for not choosing your way of
doing things. Everyone's got a different workflow. Different people,
different strokes. But saying you're stupid, or foolish, or whatever you
want to call it, for not taking on a task a certain way, is just downright
offensive!
Chris.

Hey Slau, first off I honestly do commend your stamina in sticking with
making so many strides to further Pro Tools accessibility throughout the
years. Like yourself I'm a old timer when it comes to Digidesign. Possibly
the longest but not making any assumptions. :) I've been using it since
1993 starting with a Quadra 650. I even knew about PT before version 1.0
somewhere around 1990 through Josh Rosen who was an OSC engineer at the
time. I was eventually introduced to Evan Brooks through a friend so I
feel very privileged to have learned what I know from some of the best
developers. That said, I seldom post to this group mostly because of time
restraints and rely on the good merit of others who are always eager to
help out. I did feel compelled to chime in on this topic however not to
choose sides but rather to make a few observations. I feel you may have
lashed out in a defensive rant and I don't see you being provoked in any
of Chuck's threads. My gut instinct is when someone says you can learn
from everyone they're not giving you life lessons but rather asking you to
be open minded about learning through humanity. Since I rarely post to
this group, the one time I did quite a while back you also took offense to
something very simple and clear. I expressed my regret that the shift
comma and shift period wasn't working properly in a previous version of
Pro Tools and you said there was no such shortcut. When I asked you to try
it out you blew it off and said something like nobody would use that
anyway. I believe everyone has there own work flow as you do with editing.
Just because we don't edit the same way doesn't mean it can't be done
through different methods. I've been called the fastest editor by a host
of renowned engineers and that's where I've gained my reputation. You are
also a staunch advocate about reading the manual and to this date 23 years
later I have never read any of it and will promise you I know as much
about anyone who has because I've learned from the best and the
originators. Back in 93 there was not even a way for me to read the manual
other than having it read to me. Again, I'm just explaining that different
individuals have different ways of learning and working. I also have high
memory retention so things like remembering such shortcuts as the shift
comma and period are easy for me to recall. Over the last 20 years I'm
proud to have brought the attention of many fixes to the engineers both at
Digidesign and Avid. I also credit myself with making them aware of
issues they never knew existed. In the early 90's there were very few
engineers working at Digidesign and I remember speaking to one on the
phone about a problem. When he asked about colors on the screen I
explained I couldn't see the screen. I have a vivid memory of him saying
"you probably shouldn't be using this type of program." the fact I'm
getting at is there was no accessibility group back then, there was nobody
to help, there weren't resources like Google and such to research
troubleshooting. I certainly don't think one would need to resort to going
through making a mail rule for a user that is clearly not causing any
trouble for the group and quite honestly I'm sure has helped new users of
Pro Tools. It's not my place to understand if there is some kind of
internal feud between both of you but my perception of you lambasting him
publicly could be considered childish and doesn't deserve public
persecution. It clearly just makes the rest of us readers feel bad which
may have not been your intent but you are intelligent enough to understand
how humiliation feels. Unless you have grown up with never being ridiculed
and in a perfect world a good idea is to step back once in a while and
contemplate others feelings. Before you say you don't care or that this is
a life lesson I assure you it's quite the opposite. When we had spoken
personally in the past I know your views can be quite strong and sometimes
aggressive but as I have gotten older I have learned to listen more and
hope to also learn from others as well. Again, we're all grateful for you
stepping up to the plate and making Pro Tools what it is today for
accessibility. Your tireless efforts of forging ahead in what can
sometimes seem like a dead end is well appreciated by everyone in this
group. I always want to be evolving as for that's where all of this
technology came from in the first place. To be frank, this thread should
not even warrant a reply because that's just adding to the clutter but I'm
hoping some of my words may ring true with others.
