Guys,

A lot of you on this list are by far and away more experienced and way more
professional than I am at doing this sort of thing, and therefore, I'd like to
really get some good help here on this, as I want this track to be as pollished
as I can possibly get it.

I'm going to be recording the following song. Baiscally, I'm going to be
singing along with a karaoke track which I've obtained. The song is called
Forgiveness, by Matthew West. Here is a link so you all can get an idea of the
song.

So, here is my question where I need some suggestions if it was you all
recording this.

Clearly, as you can hear, Matthew's vocals dynamically go all over the map. On
the first verse, where he starts with the lines, "It's the hardest thing to do
today, and's the last thing on your mind today," he's not exactly quiet, but
he's definitely not really bellowing either. But now, listen on the choruses
where he starts with, "Show me how to love the unlovable." On this part,
dynamically, he goes basically full blown just... push it to high heaven! I
didn't say he forces it, but he definitely goes very very forte... very very
loud. Finally, we have the third part of the song on the third verse starting
with "It moves the bitterness away." On this part, he's quite quiet, as this
is supposed to be kind of the wind down intament part of the song, if you will.

So, my point is, as you can see, he's volumewise all over the flippen map! My
question is, what's gonna probably be the best way to tackle these dynamics
from a mixing perspective? Would it be better on the choruses to set a really
fast attack, and have it just really really clamp down when I hit those loud
parts, or do you think it would be probably more feezible to clamp those loud
parts down more with writing volume automation to the vocal track, or thirdly,
do you think turning it down a ways with some clip gain reduction would be best.

I know all of these methods would work, but I'm just wonderring which would be
the most suttle, and the least jarring in the actual context of this song.

Thanks for any help. A friend also told me, on the chorus, he'd almost totally
drown it in wet reverb. I'm not sure if I'd do that though. What do yall
think?

Chris.
