Hi Allen, I've never used the Equals key on the numeric keypad while in Pro Tools. It might have a use but I'm not sure what it might be. First things first, are you using an Apple keyboard?
The key immediately to the left of the Asterisk key at the top right of the num pad (not including the function keys) is the slash key. Pressing it once highlights the first set of numbers in the Start field. Pressing it again highlights the first numbers in the end field. Pressing it again highlights the first set of numbers in the Length field. Pressing it again goes back to Start and keeps cycling. If a field is highlighted, pressing the decimal key advances the focus to the next set of numbers in that field. So, if you press asterisk once and you're in bars and beats, you'll be focused on the bar section of the start field. Pressing asterisk again will focus you on the bars section of the end field. Pressing the decimal will focus you on the beats section of the End field. If you wanted to select 3 beats starting wherever the insertion point is currently located, you'd press the asterisk key twice to get to the length field, press decimal to get to the beats field, type 3 then press Enter on the num pad. Hope that makes sense.
