If you set up the definitions within the Apple audio MIDI Setup application, you can use external synths. You'll be best off with some sighted assistance to set it up but, once it's set up, it's alright. The AIR Expansion Pack is definitely worth it. It often goes on sale. Keep an eye on the prices.
