To create a tempo map, put the insertion point where the music would be at the
equivalent of bar 1, beat 1 and press Command+I for Identify beat. a dialog
will open. Simply press 1 to identify it as bar 1 and hit Return. If it's a
fairly steady tempo, you can move to where the music would be at, say, bar 9
and repeat the process but type the number 9 and press Return. Once you've done
this twice, the bar/beat markers will be fairly close from there. Continue the
process throughout the tune. Sometimes you can get away with doing every 8 bars
or so but sometimes it's necessary to do 4 bars at a time if tempos change.
Sometimes you'll need to do every bar if there's a pronounced accelerando or
ritardando. Also, in cases where there's no clear downbeat on 1, you can move
to beat 3, for example, and, with the Identify beat dialog open, type the bar
number, press decimal and 3 and hit Return. It's all a matter of defining
exactly what is what as often as it is necessary in order for the timeline to
reflect what's happening in the music. Naturally, it helps to have a click
track to verify how things are going. Note that, if there are any meter
changes, you'll have to create a 4/4 meter event at the top and, once you've
established the bar/beat marker for where a meter change occurs, enter a meter
change at that bar and continue. That's the most basic approach to setting up a
tempo map for pre-existing material.
