If you're focused on a channel strip in the Mix window, double tap the t key
and it will bring up the track's contextual menu which, in the process, will
select the track. Simply hit escape and the track is now selected. This, of
course, is only with the Inspector on. Otherwise, press VO j to jump into the
tracks list and you will automatically be put on the selected track. Deselect
and navigate to get to the track you wish to select. If you want, double tap
Option Shift w to bring up the Show Only Selected Tracks option quickly and now
that'll be the only track shown so it's easier to get to.
If you don't know whether there's something in the main playlist of a track,
providing you're in waveform view, press Control Tab. If there's anything in
the playlist, it will be selected so, if you're anywhere other than the very
beginning of the timeline, there's a selection and, therefore, there's
something in the track. If you're still at the beginning of the timeline and
there's nothing selected (that is, there's a length of zero bars/beats or
minutes/seconds), then there's nothing in the current playlist for that track.
