Hi Martin,
There's not a huge difference between the two, agreed, but as always, these 
things are often so incremental.
An automatic plug-in monitor wouldn't be a good idea, especially when you don't 
want or need the feedback. One often adjusts controls while listening to the 
results and verbal feedback would constantly chatter. Having the option to turn 
it on and off offers the best experience, at least under the current scenario.
